ETSU Move-In Day 2026: Complete Guide for Students & Parents | Stack N Go
ETSU Move-In Day 2026: Everything Students and Parents Need to Know
Move-in day at East Tennessee State University is one of the most chaotic, exciting, and logistically demanding days of the year — for students and their families alike. If you're heading to Johnson City in August, a little preparation goes a long way toward turning move-in day from a stressful ordeal into a smooth start to the school year.
Here's everything you need to know.
Official ETSU Move-In Dates for 2026
Mark these on the calendar now:
New freshmen and transfer students: Wednesday, August 19, 2026 Check-in runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is also the start of ETSU Preview, the university's new student orientation program. Students will need to schedule their move-in appointment through the Housing Portal — watch your ETSU email for instructions.
Returning students: Thursday, August 20 through Sunday, August 23, 2026 Move-in is available between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on any of these four days.
The dining meal plan begins at lunch on Wednesday, August 19 — so returning students arriving before that date will need to pay out of pocket for dining hall access.
What to Bring (and What to Leave Home)
ETSU residence halls vary in size and layout, but dorm rooms are universally smaller than they look in the photos. Before you pack everything you own, pull up the floor plan for your specific building on the ETSU Housing website.
Essentials to bring:
Bedding for your bed size (confirm XL Twin vs. Full before you order)
Towels and toiletries
Power strips (surge-protected — required by most dorms)
A small fan or personal desk fan
Hangers, drawer organizers, and under-bed storage bins
Laundry supplies and a laundry bag or basket
Laptop, chargers, and any required textbooks or course materials
Medications, health insurance card, and any personal care items you use daily
A first-aid kit
Rain gear — August in Johnson City means afternoon thunderstorms
Leave home:
Full-size furniture (beds, dressers, and desks are provided in most ETSU dorms)
Candles, incense, or anything with an open flame (prohibited in residence halls)
Space heaters (typically prohibited — check your hall's policy)
More clothes than will fit in your closet and dresser
Getting to Campus: What to Expect on Move-In Day
Johnson City's road network around the ETSU campus gets genuinely congested on move-in weekend, particularly on August 19. If you're driving in from outside the Tri-Cities, plan to arrive early — ideally before 9 a.m.
ETSU Housing assigns move-in time slots through the Housing Portal. Check your assigned time and stick to it. Showing up early often means waiting in a vehicle line.
Parking near the residence halls is limited on move-in day. ETSU typically designates temporary loading zones with staff directing traffic. Unload your vehicle, move it to a designated parking lot, and then carry items to the room. Don't try to park in the loading zone for the duration — it blocks families behind you.
If you're coming from Kingsport, Bristol, or further out and want to avoid the heaviest traffic, plan your departure for before 7:30 a.m. or after 11:30 a.m.
The Smart Way to Pack for a Dorm Move
Here's where most families make the move harder than it needs to be: cardboard boxes.
Cardboard is fine for some moves, but a dorm move in August in East Tennessee is almost the worst possible use case for it. Humidity softens the boxes, tape loses grip in the heat, and you're carrying them up stairs or on carts through a crowded residence hall. By the end of the day, you're also stuck with a pile of flattened boxes you need to deal with.
The better approach is renting heavy-duty contractor-grade plastic moving boxes. They're stackable, they hold their shape in the heat, and you don't need tape. Stack N Go Rentals delivers moving boxes (and a dolly) to your door — whether you're packing up from Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, or anywhere else in the Tri-Cities — and picks them up after you're settled in.
Book early. August is the busiest time of year for us, and availability fills up fast in the two weeks leading up to move-in weekend.

For Parents: What to Do After You Help Move In
ETSU hosts an Opening Day Welcome and Reception at 3:30 p.m. on August 19 for both students and families. That evening there's a Family Social at 6:30 p.m. — a chance to relax, meet other families, and hand off the keys to adulthood with some light appetizers.
If you have time before you head back home, here are a few practical things worth doing before you leave Johnson City:
Walk the campus together so your student knows where their classes are
Find the closest urgent care and pharmacy to campus (Johnston Memorial, JCMC, and several urgent cares are within a short drive)
Locate the nearest grocery store — the Kroger on Browns Mill Road and the Food City on Oakland Avenue are both close to campus
Confirm they have a way home for Thanksgiving — August is the time to book those flights or coordinate the drive
Johnson City While You're in Town
If you're coming in from out of town for move-in weekend, here are a few local spots worth knowing:
Food: Southern Craft Barbecue downtown is a local favorite. Tipton Street Pub is popular for a more casual meal. The Farmer's Market in downtown Johnson City is worth a stop on Saturday mornings.
Coffee: Yee-Haw Brewing Co. has become a Johnson City institution — good beer, but also a comfortable spot to decompress after a long move-in day.
If you need supplies: Target on North Roan Street and Walmart Supercenter on Browns Mill Road are your best bets for anything you forgot to pack.
